But, have we ever stopped to think about the environmental impact of using plastic toothpaste and toothbrushes? That’s exactly what inspired the creation of The Good Company, who have set out to revolutionise the oral care industry through their toothpaste tablets. Made from natural Australian ingredients to polish and remineralise your teeth, The Good Company’s tooth tablets are a sustainable game-changer and are here to shake up our two-minute routine for good.
We sat down with Chelsea, the founder of The Good Company to chat a bit more about how she came up with the innovative idea of toothpaste tablets, and why The Good Company is on a mission to revolutionise the toothpaste game. Tell us a bit about yourself and how you started The Good Company?
The Good Company all started with two questions: Why does toothpaste come in a plastic tube, and what are we putting into our bodies when we brush our teeth?
After realising that the oral care industry was due for a serious shake-up, I set out on a huge mission to revolutionise toothpaste and come up with a better solution. After almost two years of researching, developing and testing, we launched the first-ever Australian made toothpaste tablets on the market!
We love that your aim is to help stop one billion toothpaste tubes from entering our landfills and oceans every year. Can you tell us a bit more about why creating a sustainable alternative to toothpaste was important to you?
Nowadays, everyone has a keep cup, and everyone takes their reusable bags to the supermarket... but what about toothpaste? Brushing our teeth is one of those things that we don't really think about... it's a boring part of our daily routine that often goes on auto-pilot. Most of us use the same brand of toothpaste we've been using for the past 20 years and never think about the ingredients or what happens to the tube when we're done. In just 4 minutes a day, it's crazy how much waste is created - millions of toothpaste tubes, plastic toothbrushes, dental floss, mouthwash bottles (not to mention all the plastic packaging) is being dumped in our landfills and oceans every year. There isn't really a viable alternative - so I decided to create one!
Aside from the environmental aspect, what are some of the benefits that come with using tooth tabs?
When developing our tabs, it was really important to me that the formula was not only good for the environment, but also just as (if not more) effective than conventional toothpaste. Our tabs are perfectly portioned to gently polish teeth, remineralise enamel and lift surface stains - and no harsh chemicals are being absorbed while you brush. Because there's no water in our tabs, there's no need for any preservatives, and they're ideal for travelling too! We recently launched our new Smoochy Strawberry flavour, which is going to be perfect for kids (mess-free, deliciously sweet, pre-portioned... need I say more?!)
What do you believe has been The Good Company’s biggest success so far?
I think actually getting our product off the ground and launching has been our biggest success! When I first started out, I tried to order a tablet press off the internet so that I could create the tooth tabs in my garage (after a visit from the Drugs & Firearms Squad, that didn't quite work out...) and I faced a lot of rejection early on when I tried to get a manufacturer on board. Since launching, we've saved thousands of plastic tubes from ending up in landfill and have received such incredible feedback from our customers, who love using our tabs and have convinced their friends and families to make the switch. The support and love we've received has been truly mind-blowing!
What does the future hold for The Good Company?
Our products are now on the shelves with major retailers and we will continue to focus on how we can best serve our customers - and our planet - by reimagining oral care. We love hearing ideas and feedback from our community and can't wait to release some brand new products very soon!
